KJ is heading to Virginia Beach for WaterJAM!

By

At this year’s WaterJAM, Eric Marshall and KJ’s National PFAS & Emerging Contaminants Lead Dr. Charlie Liu are delivering presentations on PFAS removal in the wake of the EPA’s release of federal PFAS rules earlier this year. Also look for Mid-Atlantic Client Service Director Adrianna Dimperio presenting with Megan Pittman from Bedford Regional Water Authority on the importance of authenticity and building connections.

Please stop by Booth #521 to connect with our team and hear about our newest office, located in Virginia Beach.

No One Size Fits All for PFAS Removal: Exploring Challenges Associated with Surface Water Treatment Through Case Studies

Speaker: Eric Marshall

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) represent a threat to national water resources due to their occurrence, persistence, and potential adverse health effects associated with exposure. US EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA), Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid (PFOS), and four additional PFAS compounds have had a transformative impact on the water industry. This presentation will look at case studies exploring PFAS treatment facility design and construction aligned with these standards. Highlighting differences between surface water and groundwater sources, this presentation demonstrates distinct challenges and strategies associated with PFAS removal.

You Can’t Afford Not to Build Connections

Speakers: Adrianna Dimperio and Megan Pittman

On Wednesday, KJ’s Mid-Atlantic Client Director Adrianna Dimperio will team up with Megan Pittman, director of Administration at Bedford Regional Water Authority, to discuss interpersonal connections rather than technical ones. This presentation focuses on the relationships, culture, and morale that can make or break how people feel about themselves, their team, their workplace, and their clients. All our different relationships act as the pipelines that create our interpersonal system. If this system is well-built, that will translate into security and stability at work. This session will break down the different types of connections essential to cultivate, the costs of not growing these relationships, and the benefits of focusing on them.

Separation and Destruction of PFAS by a High-Pressure Membrane and UV-Sulfite Treatment Train – A Pilot-Scale Field Demonstration

Speaker: Dr. Charlie Liu

This presentation reports on the results of a pilot-scale nano-filtration (NF)/reverse osmosis (RO) and ultraviolet (UV)-sulfite treatment train for the combined separation and destruction of 12 PFAS detected in groundwater at a US DoD installation. Recently, the hydrated electron (eaq-), a highly reactive reductant generated by UV-sulfite photosensitizer processes has garnered attention due to its ability to reductively defluorinate a wide range of PFAS, but this technology is energy intensive for direct treatment of contaminated water supplies. This presentation discusses the application of this technology to small volume concentrate streams generated as byproducts of separation-base processes, such as membrane reject concentrate streams generated by high-pressure NF or RO treatment.
