“Nothing of this scope and speed has ever been seen in the water industry
Like many water utilities, the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency (SCVWA) is fighting an enemy it can’t see: PFAS. Almost a third of the water used in the area last year came from groundwater sources, and 28 of the agency’s 44 wells were impacted by the chemical compound. To quickly get ahead of that time-critical concern, the agency enlisted Kennedy Jenks to help formulate a response plan.
In partnership with Water Quality and Treatment Solutions, Inc., Kennedy Jenks conducted bench testing of treatment options and provided design and engineering services to construct the Single-Use Ion Exchange system that was identified as the right technology to remove the PFAS contamination. To get the wells back in service quickly, Kennedy Jenks developed pre-purchase specifications for the treatment equipment.
From the start of design to the end of construction the timeline was a total of 10 months—considered lightning fast in the industry, particularly during the COVID-19 impacted construction period. This is one of the first ion Exchange systems that Kennedy Jenks designed, and one of the first in California for PFAS treatment.
