Roseville, CA Celebrates Completion of Pleasant Grove Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

This September, Kennedy Jenks (KJ) celebrated with the City of Roseville, Calif. (City), the completed expansion of the Pleasant Grove Wastewater Treatment Plant (PGWWTP). The expansion is a feat of innovative environmental management, increasing the PGWWTP’s overall capacity to accommodate the region’s growing needs, while improving its environmental sustainability through new capabilities for generating energy and renewable natural gas. The project was made possible through a joint powers agreement between the City of Roseville, the South Placer Municipal Utility District, and Placer County.

Over the past eight years, a team of more than 100 KJ experts has provided planning, design, and construction support services to the City to expand the plant.

Many improvements were made to the PGWWTP with the goals of increasing the plant’s capacity from 9.5 million gallons per day (MGD) to 12.0 MGD, improving solids stabilization and resulting disposal options, reducing the overall biosolids quantity, and lowering the energy demand of the secondary treatment system. The City is now in a position to more reliably treat wastewater to recycled water standards for use in irrigating local parks and landscaping, thereby conserving drinking water resources.

A separate project completed at the PGWWTP converts digester gas to compressed natural gas for onsite vehicle fueling. With the completion of the project, the City can now power Roseville’s fleet of more than 30 garbage trucks, offsetting the plant’s energy consumption by approximately 10 percent.

 

We’re hopeful that the improvements our team designed to increase Pleasant Grove’s sustainability will help the City of Roseville and Placer County adapt to California’s water shortage and other environmental stresses... and we hope it demonstrates what’s possible to other municipalities in the region who are ready to overhaul outdated infrastructure. Project partners celebrated the completed project with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by a site tour of the completed facility.
